Lost Valley Ski Race

Ski Racers!

Lost Valley Ski Area is in Auburn, Maine, about 40 miles from Rumford. The ski area has a small hill that gives local city kids an opportunity to learn to ski. Sebino and Guido did a steady job as novice ski racers... and Yes! I have film. First, a little explanation.

Ski racers and the old skimeister.

In a slalom race the gates are closer together than in a giant slalom or downhill race. Racers take two runs down the course. In last night's race, 60 kids raced and then the coaches set a new course. Sebino had an excellent first run, and while trying to seek speed, he crashed in the second run. All ski racers crash, it's how we discover our limitations (it's like anything in life: we learn from our failures). Guido had two solid runs and no falls. He ended up scoring second on our team and scoring for the team. It should be noted that the Mountain Valley girls' team won their ski meet at Lost Valley!  Go, Falcons!

Lost Valley before the races.

New race jackets that the team loaned to the boys.

These results show each team's combined scores. Usually, four racers' times count
for the team's final score. So, if you score for the team, that's a big deal. Both Sebino and
Guido have scored for the team in the past 3 meets. Excellent work for first-time racers.

I know Sebino is a good sport about this film of his crash(es).
It happens to all of us, and in the Kent family's case, we ended up with
7 broken bones. And yes, I added significantly to this total:
I broke my leg in a downhill race at 17 years old and later my
foot while ski jumping. Fortunately, no one had a video camera!

Just smile, Sebino... at least you're out there battling.
